Roundabout Theatre Company staged Brief Encounter, an adaptation of Noel Coward's film, at Studio 54, with first preview on September 10, 2010, opening night on September 28, and closing night on January 2, 2011. The production moved from St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, NY. Hannah Yelland was nominated for a Tony for Best Performance of an Actress in a Leading Role and Simon Baker was nominated for a Tony for Best Sound Design of a Play.
Writing for The New York Times, Ben Brantley said, "The acrobatics of love are performed in high style in 'Brief Encounter,' which is surely the most enchanting work of stagecraft ever inspired by a movie...I first saw this [production] in London...I always remember it as a delicate, whimsical creation and worry that it might not thrive in a new environment. Yet it consistently proves sturdier and smarter than I have allowed it to be. And the current incarnation, which arrives courtesy of Roundabout Theatre Company, feels to me richer than ever." Directed and adapted by Emma Rice, with set and costume design by Neil Murray, lighting design by Malcolm Rippeth, sound design by Simon Baker, projection design by Jon Driscoll and Gemma Carrington, and original music by Stu Barker.
Hannah Yelland played the part of Laura, Tristan Sturrock played the part of Alec, Joseph Alessi played the part of Fred/Albert, Dorothy Atkinson played the part of Beryl, Annette McLaughlin played the part of Myrtle, Gabriel Ebert played the part of Stanley, Edward Jay and Adam Pleeth played the part of Musicians, and Damon Daunno played the part of Bill/Ensemble.
Originally commissioned and produced by David Pugh & Dafydd Rogers and Cineworld, Brief Encounter toured the UK regionally before opening in February 2008 at the Haymarket Cinema in London. The production transferred to the US, first playing at ACT in San Francisco, then St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, then The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis before making its Broadway debut at Studio 54. The production has subsequently toured throughout Australia and returned to the US for runs in Los Angeles in Washington.
Production records contained in 3 Hollinger boxes spanning 23 folders. Stage documentation is most complete from the lighting design perspective (full bible is present) with lesser documentation covering set and costume design. No prompt script is present but master typescript is. Collection includes 2 copies of Playbill and direct mail flyers.
