Roundabout Theatre Company staged Athold Fugard's "Master Harold"... and the Boys at the Royale Theatre, with first preview on May 6, opening night on June 1, and closing night July 13, 2003.

For The New York Times, Ben Brantley praised Danny Glover's performance, writing that he "emerges with a presence so enhanced that it verges on the monumental. He doesn't coast on dignity, though. This is gravitas rendered in shades of gray...Mr. Glover suggests a man for whom calm is an existential choice in a violent society...There is also something precious in having Mr. Glover on a stage again, to locate that sense of loss with such immediacy." [New York Times, June 2, 2003]

Directed by Lonny Price, with set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by Jane Greenwood, lighting design by Peter Kaczorowski, sound design by Brian Ronan, dance consultant Melinda Roy.

Danny Glover played the part of Sam, Michael Boatman played the part of Willie, Christopher Denham played the part of Hally. Understudies: Daryl Edwards and Bobby Steggert.
"Master Harold"...and the Boys was written by director/actor/playwright Athol Fugard and premiered in the US at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1982, and made its Broadway premiere the same year at the Lyceum Theatre. The story is autobiographical, depicting Fugard's early life living in South Africa during Apartheid. The story focuses on the effects of institutionalized racism and the relationship between a white, priviledged teenage boy and the uneducated black waiters with whom he befriends at a tea house owned by his parents.
Production records consist of one Hollinger box spaning 12 folders, 2 copies of the Playbill, direct mail flyers, and a 3x5 black and white cast and crew photo.
