Set in a rural village in the northern county of Donegal, Ireland, Brian Friel's play explores self-reflection and life choices in the Connolly family. Tom, the main character, is a novelist suffering from debilitating writers block. In order to earn money, he invites an archives assessor to review his manuscript collection, hoping to be offered a large sum of money. A friend of Tom's has recently sold his collection to the same assessor for a large sum of money, prompting Tom to wonder whether his collection - and his value as a writer - will match that of his friend in the eyes of the assessor. As Tom and his family and friends work through their individual self doubts and concerns they come to accept the fact that "being alive is the postponement of verdicts because verdicts are provided only when it's all over, all concluded."
