Machinal is a play written in the Expressionist style by American playwright and journalist Sophie Treadwell, in response to the real-life murder trial and execution by electric chair of Ruth Snyder.  None of the characters are named--a poor Young Woman who works as a stenographer is forced by her circumstances to marry her wealthy boss.  She tries to acclimate to married life with someone she is repulsed by, has a baby, and then has an affair with a younger man who causes her to realize how happy life could be.  She murders her husband and goes to trial; the play ends with her electrocution.

The play premiered on Broadway in 1928.
