Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) was a French playwright whose work, Cyrano de Bergerac, was a major success and remains one of the most widely performed plays due to its romantic ideas about individuality, inner beauty versus external beauty, and the notion of the "soul" or the existence of a heightened inner life in human beings separate from the physical, base world. The character Cyrano was based on a real person, Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac, a swordsman and poet with an oversized nose, from 17th century France.
